Study Permit
Launch Your Global Future in Canada
Securing a Canadian Study Permit is more than just an entry requirement; it is the first step in a strategic journey toward international career opportunities and potential permanent residency. Canada is home to world-renowned Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) that offer diverse programs ranging from diplomas and degrees to specialized postgraduate certificates.
However, the landscape of the International Student Program has evolved. With new enrollment caps, updated financial requirements, and specific “field of study” rules for work eligibility, navigating the application process requires professional foresight. Whether you are applying for your first permit or seeking an extension to complete your credentials, our firm ensures your academic path is built on a compliant and professional foundation.
Initial Study Permit: Getting It Right the First Time
To study in Canada for any program exceeding six months, you must obtain a study permit. Since the introduction of the national cap on study permit applications, the process now involves additional layers of provincial approval.
The Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL)
Most new post-secondary students now require a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) from the province where they intend to study. This document confirms you fall within the provincial allocation for the year.
Note: As of January 1, 2026, Master’s and Doctoral degree students at public DLIs are generally exempt from this requirement.
Essential Requirements for Approval
Letter of Acceptance (LOA): A valid offer from a DLI.
Financial Capacity: You must prove you have sufficient funds to cover your first year of tuition plus the updated cost-of-living requirement (currently $22,895 for a single applicant outside Quebec).
Proof of Identity: A valid passport or travel document.
Intent to Reside: You must satisfy an officer that you will respect the conditions of your stay and depart Canada at the end of your authorized period.
Study Permit Extensions & Maintained Status
Your journey doesn’t always end on the date stamped on your original permit. If your program is longer than expected or you are moving to a new level of study, you must apply for a Study Permit Extension.
The Power of Maintained Status
If you submit your extension application before your current permit expires, you benefit from Maintained Status (formerly known as Implied Status). This allows you to continue studying—and working, if eligible—under the same conditions while IRCC processes your renewal, even if your original permit expires in the meantime.
When to Apply: We recommend submitting your extension at least 90 days before your current permit expires.
Restoration of Status: If you miss the deadline, you have a 90-day window to apply for a “Restoration of Status.” During this time, you must stop studying and working immediately until your new permit is issued.
Working While You Study
A Canadian education offers the unique advantage of gaining local work experience.
Off-Campus Work: Eligible full-time students can work up to 24 hours per week during academic sessions and full-time during scheduled breaks.
On-Campus Work: Generally, there is no hour limit for work performed on your school’s campus.
